GREGORY - Authorities continue searching for about 20 immigrants who ran from the scene of two traffic stops in Gregory and Portland this morning.
Before 9 a.m. an officer with the Portland Police Department tried to pull over a truck on Highway 181 near Buddy Ganem, but the driver fled.
The officer soon noticed a Ford F-150 and a Dodge Ram were traveling together. Both trucks have temporary license plates.
The driver of the Ford went off into a field in Portland where everyone bailed out.
Another officer stayed after the Dodge which stopped on Gregory Street in Gregory right after the tailgate came open and several people fell out.
No one was seriously injured.
Stephen F. Austin Elementary went on lockdown as Portland Police, Gregory Police and the San Patricio County Sheriff's Office started searching for everyone.
We're told 18-20 people are currently in custody. Police think a total of 42 people were in the trucks. The immigrants are from Central America.
