Architect Accused of Bribing Public Officials in Progreso

McALLEN, Texas (AP) - A South Texas architect has been indicted in a widening public corruption probe involving allegations of bribes and projects in the city of Progreso.

Federal prosecutors in McAllen on Wednesday announced the arrest of 57-year-old Jesus Bustos on charges of conspiracy and bribery.

Investigators allege Bustos paid bribes to obtain contracts on public construction projects for his architectural firm, IDEA Group LLC. The agreements involved federal education funds.

Three members of a family were indicted earlier on corruption charges related to the Progreso Independent School District - Progreso Mayor Omar Vela, his brother ex-school board President Michael Vela and their father, Jose Guadalupe Vela Jr., who formerly managed the district's transportation and maintenance.

IDEA Group officials didn't immediately comment Wednesday.

If convicted, Bustos faces up to 10 years in prison.
