ARANSAS PASS - The woman who was found dead in a burning trailer in Aransas Pass last month was alive when the fire broke out.
According to police, the medical examiner said 54-year-old Vicki Mathis had smoke in her lungs - an indication that she was alive when the fire started.
We're also told the trailer she and her friend were living in had no electricity service or running water. The friend told officers that they'd use a barbecue grill inside to cook and also used extension cords to get power from neighbors.
He told police he tried to save Mathis, who was disabled, but was overcome with smoke.
Investigators sent an arson dog to the home to try and find any signs that the fire was intentionally started, but the dogs didn't find anything.
The State Fire Marshal's Office is handling the investigation.
