ARANSAS PASS - Fire departments from across the Coastal Bend continue battling a very large brush fire that forced the mandatory evacuations of residents in Aransas Pass this afternoon.

There's no word on what started the fire that's affected several city blocks on the northside of town. Authorities are keeping everyone far away from the scene, so there's no way to confirm yet if any homes have burned.

This afternoon the Department of Public Safety's helicopter flew overhead to warn residents of mobile home parks to leave immediately.

An Emergency Alert Message from the National Weather Service told people living on the 7th through 13th Streets to evacuate. They were told not to try and salvage any property.

At last report the fire was headed Northwest towards the Highway 35 bypass. Evacuees are being taken to Aransas Pass city hall.
