Apartment Building Badly Damaged After Fire

CORPUS CHRISTI - A fire left an apartment building in horrible shape this evening.

Firefighters responded to a fire near Staples and Park Avenue around 5:30.

Initially, they thought there was somebody trapped inside the building, but after getting inside, they found no one was there.

A neighbor across the street told us she thought her daughter and her friend were inside when she saw the flames.

"I ran up stairs and kicked in the door because of my daughter. And I ran inside. I couldn't find anybody but a cat," Sheynan Davenport says.

Luckily, no one was inside and no one was hurt.

Firefighters say the damage was pretty bad and most everything inside the building burned.

Residents won't be able to return for quite some time.

Fire officials say they'll contact the Red Cross and see if any of the displaced families need help as they find a place to stay.
