Animal Control Shelter Overpopulation

CORPUS CHRISTI -The Animal Control Shelter is completely full. So signs have been posted all around the center letting residents know so.
"Until we have room in the facility, we can't take anymore animals," said the officer who sees over Animal Control Commander Todd Green.
So dogs wandering around our streets have to wait in the cold until room becomes available.
Because of the over population Animal Control is having to euthanize dogs so they can make space so new one's can come in.
"Unfortunately euthanizing for space is very common in open and take shelters and it's very unfortunate that has to happen," said People Assisting Animal Control president Cheryl Martinez.
Animal Control workers say the overpopulation is because of people not wanting their pets anymore. Another reason is because they are having to hold animals for a longer period of time giving owners a chance to pick them up if they are out of town for the holidays.
They are putting down animals on a daily basis. Last month alone, over half of the animals brought into the shelter had to be euthanized.
"Unfortunately you know, there's more animal that we euthanize than we adopt," said Commander Green.
So if you see a dog roaming around your neighborhood, you can call Animal Control but it may be a few days before they can go pick it up.
Animal Control is asking for your help. If you can afford to adopt an animal from them, you would actually be saving two animals. One will have a new home, and another can be taken off the streets getting the chance to be adopted.
