Animal Control Changing Fostering Rules

CORPUS CHRISTI -- Several mixed breed puppies either dropped off at Corpus Christi Animal Care by owners or picked up as strays over the weekend are in need of a home. As of this afternoon 7 puppies have been adopted, but there are still more than a dozen at the facility.
Several people came in to look at the puppies that officials say are scheduled to be euthanized.
"They were going to be putting some puppies down if they didn't find a home or foster homes," Roxanna said.
She says she ran into some problems when she tried fostering two black labs.
"They asked for references, I had to put down my friends' references and I had to put down how long I've known them, I have to putdown where I worked and then they said no," Roxanna said.
Roxanna is a great candidate for fostering any one of the puppies, there was just one problem.
"They finally told us that we couldn't foster any at all because we live so many miles away from the city limits. You have to live in the city limits. Which we don't, we live on a ranch that's why we have 7 acres to give a home to and they won't allow that," Roxanna said.
Captain Russell Sherman says, it's important that city officials be able to monitor the pets that come and go through this animal care center. Officials would have no jurisdiction outside the city limits for fostered pets and they want to ensure that all the animals are fixed so that the overcrowding problem doesn't get worse.
However, officials say they will start allowing people who live outside the city limits to foster pets simply because the benefits will be greater for the animals in the long run.
