CORPUS CHRISTI -- The American Legion Post 364 on Friday cancelled an event after it said the organizer mislead the post into believing the event was for men only when it in fact involved women, appealed to high school students and promoted a sexually-charged dance.
"My initial reaction let me tell you my blood went down to my feet. I couldn't believe what I was hearing," said post commander Pablo Garza Jr. "I said, 'No, it can't be happening; there's no way.'"
Garza said a man in a Navy uniform booked the event and told legion management that it would be a function involving men only. But Garza said the fliers the organizer distributed to at least one high school billed the event as "The 2013 Twerk Bash," and featured two scantily clad women.
Twerking is the provocative dance that Miley Cyrus made infamous during her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in August. It involves bending over and thrusting and gyrating one's hips.
Garza said another issue is that the flier advertised that an I.D. would not be required to attend the event, something he said is not consistent with American Legion policy.
"This will not happen here on this premises, I guarantee you. Especially when it says, 'No I.D. required.' We do not allow anyone to come on our premises if they don't have an I.D."
Garza sent the man who booked the hall for the event a letter outlining the legion's policy on functions. It reads in part: "The American Legion did not...give you permission to distribute tasteless fliers that were distributed throughout our local schools and community."
Garza said event organizer is a Navy officer stationed in Kingsville. He said the man has contacted an attorney. Garza said he has also contacted an attorney and said he also plans on contacting the man's superior at the base.
The man could not be reached because legion officials did not want to release his number.
