"American Gangster" Actress, Ruby Dee, Dies at 91

NEW YORK - One of America's legendary stage and screen actresses has passed away.

Ruby Dee died Wednesday night at the age of 91.

Dee's daughter, Nora Davis Day, says the actress died at her home in New Rochelle, New York, surrounded by family and friends.

Dee earned acclaim during her long career for her work on stage, radio, television as well as film.
She earned an Oscar nomination in 2007 for her role as Denzel Washington's mother in the film "American Gangster".

Numerous times, Dee acted alongside her husband of 56 years, Ossie Davis. the pair met on Broadway in 1946.
he passed away in 2005.

The couple was active in civil rights issues and served as masters of ceremonies for the 1963 March
on Washington. She also spoke at the funerals for both Rev. Martin Luther King Junior and Malcolm X.
