Alligator Hunting Season Opens Today

CORPUS CHRISTI - They're large, scaly, and often terrifying, but for some people, they're a challenge. And the hunt begins today.

It's alligator hunting season for Nueces County.

Three things are mandatory when hunting gators. First, you need a valid hunting licence. Texas Parks and Wildlife sells them for around $25.

Secondly, you need permission from a private land owner to hunt. Hunting on public property is allowed, but you need a special permit, and they've very difficult to obtain.

Over 500 people applied for a special permit to hunt in Choke Canyon last year, and only 10 people received permits. Out of those ten, one man harvested one of the largest alligators in the state, measuring at 14 feet, 800 pounds.

Finally, once you've harvested an alligator, you need to turn in an official report to the state. The report document can be found online.
