LAREDO - A 36-year-old man from Alice is now in federal custody after he was caught driving a truck carrying 14,353 pounds of marijuana worth more than $11 million.
According to the Border Patrol, the unnamed driver made an abrupt u-turn right before a temporary checkpoint along Highway 83, just south of Laredo yesterday. The large 2006 Mack truck hauling a metal box container started heading southbound in an erratic fashion.
Agents say the driver became nervous during a traffic stop and could not keep his story straight. A drug-sniffing alerted agents to the container on the back of the truck. X-rays of the container confirmed there were bundles inside.
The 731 cellophane wrapped bundles contained marijuana. The driver, truck and drugs are now in the custody of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
