ALICE - The man accused of stealing a car with a toddler still inside claims police have the wrong guy. Police say 24-year-old Mark Anthony Gonzalez is charged with kidnapping and auto theft for incident last week where a mother left her car running and a guy hopped in the front seat.

The child and car were found less than an hour later, not far from where it was stolen. 3-year-old Alina Salinas was not injured. Her family told us the thief apologized to her during the ride and said he was going to try and find her mother.

Today, Gonzalez told a reporter for the Alice Echo News Journal "I would never do anything like that.. it was my friend."

Police had released a sketch of the suspect wanted in the kidnapping. U.S. Marshals tracked down Gonzalez to a home on Schely Avenue around noon today.

According to the newspaper, police have dealt with Gonzalez in the past for charges of burglary and theft.
