Alice Fire Department Gets New Central Station

ALICE - The Alice Fire Department is looking forward to a fire station three times the size of their current one.
Today we took a sneak peek at the new facility and the potential plans for the space.
Captain Adan Garcia says the new station is three to four times the size of the current station on Third Street.
Garcia says the new facility, a former Texas National Guard building, will ultimately give them the space they need as a growing department.
Garcia says, "At the older station we just ran out of room."
He says the building will create specific space and comfortable atmosphere for more than 30 fire fighters who work 24 hours straight.
Garcia says, "Areas for office, areas for classroom. Separate sleeping quarters, male and female. Thing we don't have right now."
Which is where Alaena Tate comes in. She has been with the Alice Fire Department for 8 months and is the only female on staff.
Tate says, "If I'm upstairs, I go into the locker. You know, I lock the door and the guys know hey, I'm going to take a shower, I'm going to use the restroom the door stays locked."
Tate says right now all the fire fighters share the bathrooms, dorms, and showers, which can get a little cramped. She says even though the guys respect her space. Having separate facilities will be more comfortable and hopefully draw more woman to the department.
Tate says, "Maybe in the future it could allow more females to come out and test with us."
Tate says the beauty of the new building means the department is continuing to grow and she loves being part of the fire family, "I'm accepted as one of the guys and I'm very blessed to say that, you know they act like their normal selves. They're dorks around me."
The Fire Department plans to start working on the interior in Janaury.
