FLOUR BLUFF -- Christus Spohn Memorial announced this month it has closed the children psychiatric sector at the hosptial. Now, there's only one hospital in the Coastal Bend that treats adolescent psychiatric patients. Associate administrator Jaime Molbert from Bayview Behavioral Hospital says he's happy to welcome new and current patients to the local center.
"We have doubled our occupancy for adolescents in response to community need," Molbert said.
The newly renovated Bayview Behavioral Hospital has contracted with Nueces County MHMR to treat adolescent patients that had been under the care of Christus Spohn Memorial. Molbert says the new location can house twice as many patients as before.
The center was recently renovationed and can now house 68 patients including 40 patients under the age of 17.
"We are happy to dedicate that additional space to adolescents," Molbert said.
Molbert describes the cottage style campus as a serene environment to treat young children who may be dealing with a crisis and says the increase in patients is no problem.
"It does not present a burden we are prepared, we had the space and capacity we have the psychiatrists and we beefed up staffing. If we do get to the capacity where we are unable to treat, we are contracted with facilities in San Antonio and Dallas," Molbert said.
Christus Spohn Memorial says their contract with Nueces County MHMR had expired and Bayview Behavorial Hospital. Both hospitals made sure no patient would be left untreated during the transition.
