Mother's Day Weekend Protest Against Abortion Provider

CORPUS CHRISTI -- A group of pro-life protesters plan to set up outside Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital for Mother's Day weekend. They're upset the city's only abortion provider now has admitting privileges at the hospital.

In a statement to 6 News, the hospital said "CHRISTUS Spohn is committed to protecting the value of all life and does not perform abortions."

"Here you have all these mothers, they're not mothers who had abortions, they're mothers of dead children," said protestor Daniel Sem, "these are children in God's eyes."

Sem is with Sovereign Grace Community Church. He usually spends at least once a week outside the Coastal Birth Control Center on Morgan protesting abortions performed by Dr. Eduardo Aquino.

"Engagement can range from giving us the middle finger, cursing us, sometimes even threatening us," Sem described. "I had a guy brandish a gun at me once to weeping, and tears and coming over and saying I don't want to do this."

A new state law requires Dr. Aquino to be granted admitting privileges to a hospital within 30 miles of his practice. Otherwise, he would no longer be able to practice. Since the law took effect on November 1st, about a dozen Texas abortion clinics were forced to shut down.

"By them allowing him those admitting privileges, they're basically enabling his practice to remain open and continue to kill the unborn in Corpus Christi," Sem said.

But, stripping doctors of their privileges is not a simple task. The hospital must present allegations and prove danger to the public in order to take away those admitting privileges.

Sem believes they should find a way. He's not catholic, but says because Christus Spohn is, he doesn't understand the privileges they continue to provide the doctor.

"We don't plan to stop until abortion is finished in Corpus Christi or the lord returns," Sem said.
