A Local Man Escapes From Burning Home

CORPUS CHRISTI -- Medics took a local man to the hospital Friday night after a fire broke out inside his home on 15th Street. That man is Arturo Zertuche, 62, who was trapped in his bathroom when the blaze broke out. His sister, Linda Flores says he's lucky to be alive.
"He was hanging in the bathtub screaming for help so somebody could get him out before he burned," Flores says.
Flores says her big brother is blessed to be breathing after his home caught fire.
"If it wasn't for a citizen that came by and called the fire department and the fire department is the one that saved him," Flores said.
Medics took Zertuche to the hospital after he breathed in smoke while he was trapped in his bathroom by the flames.
"He's doing fine he's in he hospital right now, I'm making sure that he's taken care of,"
As for the home, the flames destroyed the entire first floor and everything in its path...from just one cigarette.
"He smokes cigarettes so I think he lit up a cigarette and what he has in there is what brought the fire up," Flores said.
Fire officials confirmed a cigarette is what started the fire around 9 o'clock last night. Flores says her big brother lived in this home for 3 year and is a collector.
"He likes collecting books and he likes collecting his rocks and microscopes because he always wanted to be like an einstein," Flores said.
All of those things were ruined in the fire. Flores says she's trying to recover anything she can for her brother but almost everything has to be tossed.
