ROBSTOWN -- The new Romero Elementary School in Robstown is without some pretty basic amenities right now. As we reported Tuesday night, the school has no internet, no intercom system and only one phone line.

"We feel like we need to be on par as far as with the other schools on internet, and we feel like its lacking right now," Assistant Principal Dr. Julio Rangel told us.

Parents are getting frustrated."Right now I have to go pick him up at his classroom, they can't call him to the office," said Maria Lozano as she picked up her 3rd grader from campus.

Administrators are irritated too. "The students are not having access to some of the educational programs that are based off internet," said Director of Curriculum Instruction Norma Castaneda.

Beyond that, safety comes into question. Staff tells us teachers are being allowed to use their personal cell phones, usually they have to be turned off. Although there seems to be a problem with their burglar alarm, we were assured the fire alarm works.

"In order to get clearance into the building, we had to have access to the fire alarm in order to activate the fire department, so in that sense we're fine," said Castaneda.

She said although this is a frustrating situation, the one thing that does help out in this case is that the administration building is just one block away from this building.

The administration did not know the delays would be so excessive in September when they let the kids start attending. If they had, Castaneda says they probably would have kept them off the campus. "If we had known there was going to be this much of a delay, no, they could have stayed at the campuses where they were originally at," she said.

Administrators say the delays have been continuous and they say right now its all because of a switch box that Time Warner needs to install. It was first promised in October, then November 16th, now they say it will be ready December 7th. "Once Time Warner gets this switch box placed in, once the hook up that one wire, everything will work instantaneously," Castaneda explained.

She tells us all the internal wiring is otherwise complete and that the project is 99% done.

The board has said if there is no good reason given for the delay, they may take legal action against Time Warner.

This afternoon a Time Warner representative contacted our newsroom to let us know the internet service on campus should be up and running by Monday.
