6 Investigates: Missing Cheerleader Uniform Money

ALICE - The parents of children on a competitive cheerleading team in Alice have gone to police complaining that the owner of the gym stole thousands of dollars from them.

Nancy Ramirez's daughter is a cheerleader at First Class Tumble and Cheer. She says her daughter will not be able to compete in cheerleading competitions this year because the owner mishandled their uniform money.

"We are given no other choice than to believe that we were... our money was stolen," said Ramirez.

Ramirez says the team consists of about 20-25 girls and each parent gave the owner, Melissa Guzman, $480 each for uniforms. This would add up to $9 to $12 thousand. Ramirez says the money was never sent to the company. So I called Varsity Uniforms, the company that makes the outfits.

A sales representative with Varsity Uniforms told me as of today, no payment had been received. So I contacted Guzman to ask her where the money was. But she says she sent it off to the company on Wednesday, July 24th.

While talking to her on the phone I told her, "I'm not understanding, If you say you say you sent off a check, then why is Varsity Uniforms saying they never received payment?" Guzman said, "Because it was the day before Thursday."

But the uniform rep says if payment was sent last week, they should have gotten it by now.

Guzman told me, "It was sent off the day before." So I asked her, "So wouldn't they technically have it by now?" Guzman said, "I don't... No... And everybody is gonna get their money back."

Guzman told me she plans to reimburse everyone on the team on August 19th. But Ramirez says she doesn't believe her.

"I'm not gonna hold my breath on it," said Ramirez.

Meanwhile the girl's cheerleading season has been cancelled because they don't have uniforms ready for competition.

Ramirez says she and two other parents have filed police reports against Guzman.
