CORPUS CHRISTI - A viewer called in to 6 News to tell us about a potential scam that might be making its way around town.
Annaville resident Sharlet Hatmaker says it all started earlier this week when she started receiving strange phone calls.
A man called her and told her she had won a million dollars in a sweepstakes, but first she had to do something.
He wanted her to buy a pre-paid credit card and load it with $400. Then, he wanted her to give him the card information so he could access the money.
She didn't fall for it and said she wasn't interested. And when the calls wouldn't stop, she called police.
We talked to Hatmaker, who showed us the number that called her. It was registered in Jamaica.
So we called them.
A man answered the phone and would not identify himself. He said he knew about the sweepstakes, but didn't know anything about the calls.
"Someone borrowed my phone can called some people. I don't know about that. Ok?" he said.
But then, he changed his story.
"If you want any information from me, you have to pay me off. Ok?" he said.
We said no, so he responded, "Ok, then you can kiss my a**!"
In the end, Hatmaker just had one thing to say.
"I think it's sad, myself, and I worry what if they do that to somebody else and bug them and harass them, and they don't let up," she says.
Police say that scams like this can spike this time of year since businesses like Publisher Clearing House often do their cash giveaways around this time.
