6 Investigates: Kleberg County Unserved Arrest Warrants

KLEBERG COUNTY - Officials in Kleberg County are trying to figure out what to do about a pile of un-served arrest warrants. Apparently, they've let the problem slide for years, and now they have more than 800 un-served warrants on their hands.
We searched through documents at the Kleberg County Courthouse that revealed there are 872 total un-served arrest warrants. Some of the big numbers include: 132 un-served warrants for D-W-I's, 145 un-served warrants for possession of marijuana, and also 145 un-served warrants for theft by check.
So we went to talk with the Kleberg County Warrant Officer, Gabriel Gonzalez, but he had no comment for us.
We talked with County Judge Juan Escobar, who told us crime in Kleberg County is on the rise and that Gonzalez is the only warrant officer for the county. He says Gonzalez may be overwhelmed.
"We have a lot of criminal activity taking place in this county. You have to realize that Kleberg County is located on a cartel corridor. So, a lot of these people may be coming through Kleberg County speeding, D-W-I's... It just so happens that Kleberg County only has one individual where bigger counties have more individuals with a similar problem," Escobar says.
Still, we asked how the problem could have gotten this bad.
"I could not give you an answer at this point," Escobar says.
Escobar added that they're in the process of making sure their computer system is up to date. Once it is, other law enforcement agencies will have access to the names of the people wanted in Kleberg County.
