CORPUS CHRISTI - We've continued to look through reports from the City Auditor that track how our tax dollars are spent. 6 news has learned that some city employees paychecks weren't properly approved.
When the Audit Department checked payroll records, they found problems. Problems like employees taking leave that wasn't properly approved, and overtime pay that wasn't documented.
They even found that some employees were editing and approving their own time cards, meaning no one was double checking their pay.
The city, like many businesses, has a system where employees punch a clock when they check in our out of work. The city has an electronic system for this called the KRONOS system.
Those hours are then recorded and kept track of on time sheets.
The problem was that the city used to have clerks in each department that approved all the time sheets, including their own. That means that the clerk could make and approve edits to their own time sheet.
What's more is there was no supervisor above that clerk to double check those edits.
But the city has fixed that problem. Now, all time sheets go through the Finance Department and are approved through proper supervisors.
Finance Director Constance Sanchez says having one department control the process makes it more efficient.
"We thought it would be more effective to have all the payroll consolidated in one area rather than have them in the departments," she says.
The city says no disciplinary action was taken as a result of the reports.
