GREGORY - We have continuing coverage of the $144,000 that is missing from Gregory City Hall. We attended the city council meeting tonight to ask about Patty Lacy, the former employee charged with stealing some of that money.
We wanted to ask Mayor Freddy Garcia how Lacy could have possibly been hired to work for the city, especially after she had previously been convicted of stealing over $170,000 from her previous employer, Ewing Construction.
We tried to talk with Garcia before the meeting, but he walked away from us, saying that he was running late for the meeting. Before he went in the doors, he did say that she wasn't hired on his watch.
"I did not hire her. The past administration hired her. The past secretary hired her. I did not hire her," Garcia says.
We waited through the meeting and gave him another chance to answer our questions. We asked him if he knew Lacy outside of work, but he walked away again, telling us that we should talk to the city attorney.
For now, the question as to why she got hired remains unanswered.
Lacy is out of jail on bond. Her first court date has not been set.
