CORPUS CHRISTI -- We all know its buyer beware on Craigslist. But one ad persistently popping up on the Corpus Christi Craigslist site is violating state rules.
Some question whether two massage therapists from out of town are doing more than violating a code of ethics for licensed therapists.
6 Investigates spoke with the woman who posted the ads. Bbut first, what do licensed therapists in town think about the ads?
Lynn Schauster, Vice-President of Affiliated Therapy Group Practice, took a look at the ads for us. "There's no name, not even the name of the place you're calling, much less a massage therapist," she said.
We first saw the ads in February. Not only did they have 956 area code, but they also offered services like four hand massage. That's a massage with two therapists at once, presumably with the two young girls pictured in the ad. They also claimed to have "mens packages."
"I would assume that this is not necessarily a legitimate massage therapist, that they're looking for more than, you know, maybe a happy ending at the end of the massage, which I wouldn't promote, we don't promote at our facility," Schauster said.
That is against massage therapy licensing rules.
So what does the woman behind this ad have to say about it? After a handful of calls over a couple of weeks, we finally reached her.
"I am not (shady)," she said, "and I don't appreciate that people would assess that," said Dawn Lopez.
We found out she is licensed by the State of Texas out of an office in McAllen. The Texas Department of State Health Services told us in an email that her ads are in violation.
According to the code of ethics, a board representative said, "the legal name of the massage therapist or his or her license number must be listed in each advertisement." The board representative says they did call to notify the Craiglist poster of the rules with no immediate response.
Then another two ads surfaced on Craigslist with the same photos, phone number, and violations of the code of ethics.
Dawn Lopez told us she never got a call from the state. "They emailed us on the 27th that they had left a message at this number to notify you," we told Lopez. "I don't check my voicemails," she replied.
Lopez says she lives in the Rio Grande Valley, but comes to Corpus Christi to visit her fiance. That's when she works massage. She says she does everything by the book, but admits other therapists have accused her of prostitution.
"I've done nothing wrong. I'm not prostituting myself. I do have a valid state license and I would like to keep my license," Lopez said.
Her license is valid until August this year.
But, what about the men's packages? She tells us its nothing dirty. "Females don't ask for the other services that we have," Lopez said, "its very rare that I'll get a woman calling asking for like a body scrub," she said.
Back at the Affiliated Therapy Group, Shauster finds Lopez's attire in the ad a little off. "The pictures are a little bothersome," she said, "it says no sexual, or no erotic, but the pictures would make you, would lead me to believe, they suggest otherwise."
The board says its okay to advertise in the clothing shown, but not alright to massage in it.
Lopez says she wears pants and a shirt in her practice, and only once has she had a request for sex. "The guy hung up on me after I told him no," Lopez said.
Lopez says the other woman in her ads is also a licensed therapist from Laredo. We did verify her license as well, she says the two met at a seminar and work together when they both come to Corpus Christi.
By the way, the Craigslist ads were removed today after we reached Lopez by phone.
