CORPUS CHRISTI - A contractor the city paid millions to work on your voter approved bond projects is under fire from the Department of Labor.
Reytec Construction is classified as a "severe violator" with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. They have been since September 2011. That means they were classified that way before the city granted them millions in construction contracts.
It's called the Severe Violator Enforcement Program and Reytec is part of it. O.S.H.A. says it's for employers "who have demonstrated indifference to their OSHA act obligations by committing willful, repeated, or failure-to-abate violations".
The city gave Reytec three major Bond projects in 2012 totaling nearly $30 million.
The significant one was a $17.7 million contract to do road construction work on Williams from Rodd Field to Nile.
Back in March, that construction site had a major accident when two workers were pinned by their legs underneath a giant slab of concrete after it gave way while they were cutting it.
The workers were rescued.
O.S.H.A. fined Reytec $63,000 for safety violations related to that accident.
The City Engineering Department told us they don't regularly check that O.S.H.A. list, but they said a contractor being on that list isn't enough to cut off business with them.
The department added that Reytec has been a reliable contractor the city and has provided reasonable bids for projects.
The department says that saving money for taxpayers is always one of their top priorities on projects.
