CORPUS CHRISTI - A Corpus Christi police officer who had recently come under investigation has resigned. The department says it was checking to see if Bernardo Torres misused company equipment.
Torres worked for the department for 27 years and resigned right as the department was gathering information to determine if he had used a company computer for inappropriate reasons.
Police Chief Floyd Simpson says that the department routinely checks to make sure all their employees are using company equipment appropriately, but when they were checking out Torres, it appeared that he may not have been. Simpson says they were in the early stages of the investigation and that it stopped when Torres resigned.
So we asked the chief if the timing of Torres's resignation seemed odd.
"Not to us. It's his choice. You know, you make a choice when to come to work and then you make a choice when to leave. He chose to leave," Simpson says.
We asked Simpson if he thought Torres resigned because of the investigation.
"I don't know. You'd have to talk to him about that," Simpson says.
So we went to find Torres to do just that. We confirmed where he lived and tried knocking on his door. A man came to the window, but then went away after he saw us.
For now, whatever the police department was checking into has come to a stop after their subject left the force.
