ALICE -- At least one business in Alice blames skate boarders for a lot of recent vandalism. Now the city is looking to build a skate park to help. Jeanette Burris, an administrator at a local business says the idea to build a park designated for skaters is a good solution.

"If you want to skate board that's fine but why tear up a building while your sitting there watching your buddy jump his ramp," Burris said.

She is one of several people who have seen vandalism right outside her office, she says it was done by kids who skate board on the property. She says the wear and tear damage is clearly done to the structures located on sight and she's even taken pictures of vandals in the act.

"They have absolutely no respect for the property, for what it costs property owners to repair this damage, there's no sense in it," Burris said.

Warning signs have been put up but Burris says they aren't enough to keep skaters off public and private property. The city hopes that building a skate park will help remedy the problem.

City officials say a 45-hundred square foot park should discourage skate boarders from using local businesses as their playground. Burris says a skate park is a great idea and long overdue.

"These kids just don't have any place to go and we felt sorry for them," she said.

The skate park will be built at Craig Park. The design the city picked will cost at least 40-thousand dollars and will include benches, hand rails and even tables. Burris says the park will be nice for the kids that really enjoy skate boarding.

"For the good kids that really just want to go out and do something that's fun for them, I think a skate park would be great," Burris said.

The city says construction of the park will begin in March.
