2014 South Texas Small School Baseball Pre-Season All-Stars

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Robstown Cotton Pickers placed three players on the 2014 South Texas Pre-Season Small School All-Star Team announced Wednesday.

All 13 members will be recognized with their large school counterparts at the 10th South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet January 29 at the Solomon P. Ortiz Center.

The event is presented by the Corpus Christi Caller- Times and ClearChannel Media + Entertainment. Tickets are on sale at the Whataburger Field Box Office. To order by phone, call 361-561-HOOK (4665).

In canvassing of thirty-six area Class 3A, 2A, A and private-school coaches, the right side of Robstown's infield - senior first baseman Abe Rubio and senior second baseman Michael De Los Santos - was voted in, along with outfield classmate Chris Esquivel.

Robstown advanced to the Region 4-3A quarterfinals, falling in three games to Hidalgo and finishing 26-10 overall.

Sinton, 28-11-2 and Region 4-3A finalist a year ago, put senior pitcher Donnie Lopez and senior battery mate Tracker Conn on the honor squad. The Pirates fell to eventual state champion LaGrange in a one-game playoff. Lopez, who also plays shortstop, was District 30-3A Junior of the Year (.388/4/27; 6-3/2.15). The Texas Tech signee earned all-state mention.

As did Refugio teammates Travis Quintanilla (pitcher) and Tyler Castellano (outfielder), who led the Bobcats to a 26-5 mark and the Region 4-2A quarters, where they fell to Bishop. Quintanilla, two-time Associated Press Class 2A Offensive Player of the Year as Refugio's quarterback, seeks his second state football championship in three seasons Thursday when the Bobcats face Cisco at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

Quintanilla holds Texas schoolboy standards for career passing yards and TD passes. He was 12-1 as a junior and posted a 0.62 ERA with 141 strikeouts over 67 2/3 innings. Castellano hit .422.

De Los Santos, Lopez and Quintanilla are repeaters from last year's squad.

Senior pitchers Jacob Cantu (Freer) and Kyle Kieschnick (Bishop), sophomore third baseman Jake Mijares (Banquete), junior shortstop Elias Alaniz (Hebbronville), senior outfielder Jacob Gonzales (John Paul II) and senior designated hitter Johnny Zamudio (Rockport-Fulton) round out the team.
