KINGSVILLE, Texas - Texas A&M-Kingsville football players Matt Stoll and Brandon James were recognized for their play in helping the Javelinas to a 21-14 win over Central Washington in the season opener on Saturday.
Stoll, who is the Javelinas senior kicker, scored the game-winning touchdown for the Javelinas on a 17-yard run on a fake punt. Stoll took a direct snap and looked for tight end Derek Tesch on a fake pass, but he was unable to break free of the line. Stoll saw room to his left and managed to out-run the defense to the corner. He added three point-after attempts.
James, a transfer from Wyoming, led the Javelinas with 12 tackles including eight solo in his Javelina debut. James and the defense that limited Central Washington to 202 yards of total offense which was their lowest total in seven years. He had 1.5 tackles for a loss, a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry.
The Javelinas will go for their second win of the season and first in the Lone Star Football Festival when they face Monterrey Tech on Saturday at noon at AT&T Stadium - formerly Cowboy Stadium.
