FORT WORTH - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Men's Tennis team suffered another tough loss on Wednesday night, falling by a 4-0 final to No. 67 TCU in a closely contested match at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the Horned Frogs campus.
The Islanders (0-3) lost to yet another nationally ranked team as TCU (4-1) came into the meeting with a No. 67 ranking in the latest ITA polls released on Wednesday afternoon.
Things started off with tense battles throughout doubles, as two of the matches went to tiebreak and the final one finishing at 8-5. Guillaume Rauseo and Gergo Weidinger fell by the 8-5 score at No. 3 doubles to give TCU the early lead. The next to finish was Andrew Maingot and Matt Westmoreland suffering an 8-7 (8-6) loss at the No. 2 position to clinch the doubles point for the Horned Frogs. The final doubles match finished at 8-7 (7-1) as Peter Nagy and Odon Barta came up just short at the No. 1 position.
In singles action Westmoreland absorbed a 6-0, 6-1 defeat to make it a 2-0 TCU lead. Ricardo Mayagoitia saw his first collegiate action, taking a 6-2, 6-2 loss at No. 5 singles to put TCU up 3-0.The match was closed out at No. 4 singles when Rauseo fell by a 6-2, 6-2 score to finish play.
With the match being played indoors, the match was stopped once a team reached the four-point threshold. Nagy's match went unfinished at No. 1, Weidinger's at No. 3 and Pietro Jordao at the No. 6 spot.
Next up for the Islanders will be a Feb. 5 match at Prairie View to end the season opening home stand. Both the men and women play the Panthers that day, with the men coming home following the match for the first home contest on Feb. 14 against Nevada at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
