PORTLAND - Gregory-Portland Head Coach Matt Anastasio is in line for one of the biggest coaching positions in the State of Texas. Ector County ISD announced Tuesday that he is one of three finalists for the highly coveted Odessa Permian job.
Permian of course is the school showcased in the movie Friday Night Lights. In fact Gary Gaines, who was the coach portrayed in the movie by Billy Bob Thornton, is the coach he could be replacing.
In two years with the Wildcats Anastasio led his squad to a record of 16-8, and a pair of trips to the postseason. This past season his team went three rounds deep posting a record of 10-3.
The other finalists are Austin Westlake Associate Head Coach Ted Willmann, and Midland native Blake Feldt who was most recently at Hays Consolidated.
The 40-year-old Anastasio and 42-year-old Willmann both were Permian assistants from 2005-08, while the 51-year-old Feldt graduated from Midland High.
We did call Anastasio for comment, but have yet to hear back from him. Sources with Gregory-Portland ISD confirmed to us that he was in Odessa set to interview with member of the board on Wednesday.
The school board plans announce their new coach following a board meeting on Friday at noon. We of course will let you know the result just as soon as it becomes official.
