CORPUS CHRISTI - The city has suspended an ordinance that banned sidewalk washing.

John Webb, the general manager of Crawdaddy's, says he had been washing bird droppings off his downtown sidewalk for nearly 20 years until the city told him to stop that practices.

He was told he could be fined up to $2,000 a day for violating a city storm water ordinance.

Wednesday evening Webb was contacted by city manager Ron Olson who told Webb the ordinance had been suspended.

Webb says he was flooded with calls of support from across the country after his story aired on 6 News.

He even did a phone interview on Fox News Wednesday morning.

Crawdaddy's Breaks the Law by Washing Bird Poop off Sidewalk

CORPUS CHRISTI - The manager of one downtown business is furious after he says the city told him he couldn't wash bird droppings off his sidewalk.

"If I can't wash my sidewalk off what am I supposed to do? I'm at a loss at how to clean this up," said General Manager of Crawdaddy's John Webb.

Webb says the city has put him in a very difficult position. For 18 years he has washed away the bird poop that covers the sidewalk in front of his downtown restaurant. That is until about a week ago when city officials told him he's breaking the law.

"Now I'm stuck with having dirty sidewalks and this bird poop. It's nasty," said Webb.

The city says when you wash pollutants, like bird poop right, off your sidewalks it flows into the storm drain system which then leads out to the bay. Officials say that's a violation of the city storm water ordinance that is based on state standards, similar to most other cities in Texas. But here's the kicker. The city says when it rains and rain water washes stuff like bird poop into storm drains, that's fine.

"It just seems kinda foolish that rain washing it off is a natural occurrence, but a water hose washing it off is a pollutant. It just really doesn't make much since to me," said Webb.

So we asked city officials, how can business owners clean their sidewalks without breaking the law? They said to vacuum it up, maybe even get a professional to clean it for you, but no matter what don't let it go down the drains. Otherwise cleaning your sidewalk could get you a $2,000 a day fine dropped at your front door.
