KDF is licensed as a Class A low-power station.  During the summer of 2006, the FCC began the process to accept applications for low-power stations to apply for a digital channel.  KDF has applied for its digital companion channel (FCC Database) and is awaiting approval for a construction permit.

That process is also underway for our low-power translator sites near Kingsville and Refugio.  Once all the construction permits have been approved, KRIS Communications will have three years to upgrade our infrastructure for Digital TV.

CORPUS CHRISTI-The year was 1956...Dwight Eisenhower was re-elected President. The first transatlantic telephone went into operation, and the New York Yankees took the World Series against Brooklyn, 4 - 3! It was also the year KRIS-TV, a brand new television station carrying the NBC signal, opened shop in Corpus Christi, Texas.

On May 22, 1956, KRIS-TV took to the airwaves, broadcasting classic favorites like Howdy Doody, Bob Hope, and Dragnet.

News and other local programs were broadcast from an uptown studio located inside the Robert Driscoll Hotel. Today a Wells Fargo Bank tower rests on the site. In the late 50's the KRIS staff packed up and relocated less than a mile away to its present site.

In 1997, KRIS acquired KDF and KAJA Telemundo - two additional stations meant more choices for quality programming. The KRIS product continues to evolve. Just four years ago, KRISTV.COM took its place on the Internet, and has grown into a huge success. KRISTV.COM, committed to local news, weather and sports, has already been named the Best (small market) Web site in Texas by the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters - and recently received a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for best Web site (small market TV station in Texas & Oklahoma).

We've come a long way...

CORPUS CHRISTI - KRIS-TV and KRISTV.COM is pleased to announce that it has received a Regional Edward R. Murrow award for its Web site.

KRIS Communications President & General Manager, Tim Noble said, "Our Internet Content Director has worked hard over the past year improving KRISTV.COM, which was launched four years ago. "I'm proud of our Internet team's ongoing efforts. It means a lot to receive this prestigious award."

This is the first time KRISTV.COM has won and Regional Edward R. Murrow award for best Web site (small market TV stations in Texas & Oklahoma). KRISTV.COM will go on to compete for the national award to be announced later this year.

To be eligible to compete in the Web site category, KRISTV.COM must disseminate timely news and information targeted for its core audiences. News content must be generated primarily by entrant, supplemented by secondary content provided by wire services or networks. The site should be of practical use to the general public and maximize online technologies to inform and educate the public and enhance public debate about important daily issues. Entries will be judged on depth and quality, content, innovation, use of audio and video, visual design, functionality and interactivity, usability, and story telling techniques.

KRISTV.COM Internet Content Director Jason Crundwell said, "It's an honor to receive this award. Our Web site was up against some tough competition from other stations. This award just reinforces our commitment to local news, weather and sports."

This is the second major award KRISTV.COM has received this year. Earlier this month, KRISTV.COM was honored as "Best Web site" in the small market division from the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters. Both awards will be presented at a banquet in Dallas on April 8.

The Edward R. Murrow Awards are sponsored by the Radio & Television News Directors Association. RTNDA is the world's largest professional organization devoted exclusively to electronic journalism. RTNDA represents local and network news executives in broadcasting, cable and other electronic media in more than 30 countries.

KRIS Communications is owned by the Evening Post Publishing Co., a privately held information and marketing company headquartered in Charleston , South Carolina. Subsidiaries of the company include television stations in California, Colorado, Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, and Texas; daily and weekly newspapers in South Carolina, North Carolina and Texas. What is RSS? (Really Simple Syndication)
RSS is an easy way to keep you automatically up-to-date on Web sites you like to visit regularly. Instead of having to go to each Web site separately to see new stories, you can use RSS to view them easily in one application or program.

KRISTV.COM now offers RSS feeds (or channels) for major sections of our web site, i.e. news headlines, sports, health and recipes.

How can I make use of RSS?
In general you need to install an application or program called a RSS Reader. RSS Readers display the information from RSS feeds on your computer.

How do I get a News Reader?
There are a number of different News Readers available; a few more popular ones are listed below, but there are now literally thousands to choose from. Many of them are free to download and use, though some of the more feature rich applications you will have to purchase.

We've set up most our staff with Attensa for Outlook.  You can catch up on your headlines while reading your e-mail.  It also has a toolbar that will let you know when a Web site has a feed available.

KRIS-DT-Corpus Christi, TX

Thank you for your interest in KRIS-TV's Digital Television (DTV) broadcasting. We are excited to offer this new technology to Corpus Christi and surrounding communities. We realize you may have questions about digital television and what it means to you and your community. We've designed this information with the help of the National Association of Broadcasters to help answer those questions.

This information will help to clarify what KRIS-TV's DTV signal is, and why you would want to experience KRIS-TV's DTV programming. For comprehensive information on the national DTV roll out, please click the related link.

Information Specific to the Corpus Christi Area
During the DTV transition period, KRIS-TV will operate both an analog signal and a digital signal. While everyone is familiar with our analog signal at Channel 6, KRIS-TV's assigned channel for DTV operations is VHF Channel 13 and will be in operation 24 hours a day effective August 13, 2004.

KRIS-TV is proud to be Corpus Christi's first commercial high definition digital television station. KRIS-TV's DTV signal is considered to be high definition. However, in the immediate future this signal will be derived, in part, from our existing analog signal by a process called upconverting. This means that the aspect ratio of our signal will be 16:9. We will be passing all NBC programming that is produced in High Definition through at the highest resolution.

Much of the local programming will be letter boxed with bars on the left and right sides of the screen.

KRIS-TV's DTV signal does not completely extend as far as our analog signal at this time. We do expect the signal will cover most of the towns in our coverage area. We recommend the use of a standard roof top antenna to receive the best possible signal. The old style antenna you may have now should work fine and will not need amplification. The antenna should be pointed directly toward our transmitter location near Robstown, and all connections should be waterproofed for endurance. KRIS-TV's DT transmitter is in the same location as the existing analog transmitter.

The KRIS-TV HD channel is now available on Corpus Christi Time Warner Cable on channel 860, and channel 407 on Grande Communications Cable You must have a HD-Digital cable box from your cable provider to receive our signal via cable. You can call Time Warner at 698.6200 or Grande at 334-4600 for more details.

The local Channel 6 signal provided by DirecTV and Dish Network is not high definition. While the DirecTV signal is digital, it is actually derived from our existing analog transmitter and is not considered HDTV. Although, if you already own a HD receiver from DirecTV or Dish Network, you can receive our DTV feed by hooking up an antenna to your satellite receiver. Consult your satellite user manual for instructions.
