BEEVILLE - As of Noon on Thursday the Beeville ISD board will approve the hiring of Jimmie Mitchell as their new Head Football Coach and Athletic Director. Mitchell, electing to leave Sealy High School to replace Troy Moses in Trojan Country. I confirmed this hiring on Wednesday, we are the first to report it.

This past season the Trojans finished up just 3-7.

You may recognize his name, as he does have past ties to the Coastal Bend. He was the Head Coach in Sinton from 2002 - 2007 compiling a record of 43-17.

Mitchell has won 48 games in six seasons at Sealy. This past season he finished up 6-4, while coaching one of the top receivers in the country in Ricky Seals-Jones, who signed to play football at Texas A&M.

Former Calallen Running Back Wes Danaher Inducted into Texas HS Hall of Fame http://www.kristv.com/news/former-calallen-running-back-wes-danaher-inducted-into-texas-hs-hall-of-fame/ http://www.kristv.com/news/former-calallen-running-back-wes-danaher-inducted-into-texas-hs-hall-of-fame/ Sports - Friday Night Fever Sat, 4 May 2013 5:33:40 PM Tyler Garrett - tgarrett@kristv.com Former Calallen Running Back Wes Danaher Inducted into Texas HS Hall of Fame

WACO - On Saturday former Calallen star Running Back Wes Danaher got his first look at his own section in the Texas High School Sports Hall of Fame. Danaher will officially be inducted later this evenings.

Danaher was arguably the best high school running back in Texas during the early 90's racking up nearly 9,000 yards on the ground during his Wildcat career.

His father Phil still mans the Calallen sidelines, but has yet to find a back that can pile on the statistics like his son. Following high school Danaher accepted a scholarship to SMU, but soon after was injured shortening his career.

In 1995 he was named the Associated Press Class 4A Player of the Year and was a two time All-State Selection.

During his career with the Cats Danaher posted four separate 300 plus yard games, twenty 200 plus yard games, and forty four 100 plus yard games. At one point he rushed for 300 plus yards in three straight games.

His rushing records still rank him in the top 10 in just about every statistical category in Texas.

There are currently 283 members of the Hall of Fame, but just nine from the 1990's. Danaher will join the likes of Koy Detmer and Drew Brees.

Here is a list of past inductees from the Coastal Bend Area: Charlie Haas (CC High - 1933-35); Marty Akins (GP - 1969-71); Ronnie Bull (Bishop - 1955-57); Ray Akins; James Lott (Refugio - 1980-83); Willie Mack Garza (Refugio - 1985-87); Emil Tagliabue - sportswriter; Johnny Roland (Miller - 1958-60).

MATHIS - The Pirates didn't go far to find their newest Head Coach as they signed former George West Longhorn Tim Holt to a two-year deal - making him the Athletic Director and new Head Football Coach. First reported by KRIS.

Holt had led George West on and off for a total of 11-seasons. In January he decided to leave the Longhorns for a job in Florida. He told me that he turned down the offer for a potential position with Sul Ross State, which ended up not working out. Around that same time Mathis approached him.

"I am very excited to get started and hopefully I can come in and make a difference and have some fun," he said.

Last season he led GW to an 8-3 record and a District 15-2A-Division 1 Title. Holt's career record is 168-105-5. Over the last five seasons his team has only lost one district game, while winning four district titles.

Holt replaces Ronnie Molina who wont 12 of 20 games over two seasons with the Pirates.

Soza one of five finalists for Coach John Wooden Citizenship Cup Award http://www.kristv.com/news/soza-one-of-five-finalists-for-coach-john-wooden-citizenship-cup-award/ http://www.kristv.com/news/soza-one-of-five-finalists-for-coach-john-wooden-citizenship-cup-award/ Sports - Friday Night Fever Mon, 22 Apr 2013 2:31:28 PM Soza one of five finalists for Coach John Wooden Citizenship Cup Award

ATLANTA, Ga. - Eric Soza is one of five finalists for the Ninth Annual Coach John Wooden Citizenship Cup Award and the winner will be announced on Tuesday night in a ceremony in Atlanta, Ga.

Joining UTSA's senior quarterback as finalists for the prestigious award are Arizona's Brigetta Barrett (women's track & field), Arkansas' Nathanael Franks (men's track & field), North Carolina's Meghan Lyons (field hockey) and Purdue's Andrea Mingo (women's basketball).

The 2013 Collegiate Wooden Cup recipient, which is presented annually to the student-athlete who is the most outstanding role model that has made the greatest positive influence in the lives of others, is presented by Athletes for a Better World (ABW).

"It's an honor to be a finalist for such a prestigious award and to be mentioned in the same breath as John Wooden is amazing," Soza said. "He is the greatest coach in the history of collegiate athletics and I try to emulate everything he stood for in my life, both on and off the field. I'm looking forward to an exciting two days in Atlanta and I want to thank Athletes for a Better World and the award committee for giving me the opportunity to experience it with the other four finalists."

Jack Nicklaus, regarded as the greatest golfer in the history of the game, also will be honored for the positive influence he has had on the game of golf and countless individuals who have admired him, as well as for the numerous ways he has contributed to improve the lives of others.

Soza, a two-year team captain, has started under center 20 times in UTSA's first two seasons. The Beeville native has led the Roadrunners to 12 wins during that time as they have made the transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision and the Western Athletic Conference. In November, he was named one of 10 finalists for the 2012 Awards and Recognition Association Sportsmanship Award.

Soza has been just as impressive away from the playing field. He is an active member of UTSA's community service program in addition to serving as the president of the school's student-athlete advisory committee. Soza also maintains a near-perfect grade-point average (3.95) in kinesiology.

John Wooden, who won 10 National Championships from 1964-75 as the head men's basketball coach at UCLA, is regarded as the greatest college coach of any sport. He is universally regarded as one of the finest human beings to ever grace the world of sports and his character, conduct and selfless gifts stand at the highest level by any standard. When Coach Wooden learned about Athletes for a Better World, he gave authorization to attach his name to this annual award and attended and addressed the inaugural event in Los Angeles back in 2005. In his honor, the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup is presented to two distinguished athletes, one collegiate and one professional, for their character and leadership both on and off the field and for their contributions to sport and society.

With Mia Hamm, John Lynch, Peyton Manning, Dikembe Mutombo, Cal Ripken Jr., John Smoltz, Pat Summitt and Andrea Yaeger as previous recipients, the Wooden Cup is becoming one of the most prestigious awards in all of sports. Recipients are considered role models and athletes of excellence both on and off the field.

Founded by ABW, a non-profit organization committed to changing the culture of American sports, the Wooden Cup is unique in that it is open to athletes in all collegiate and professional sports. Nominations are open to every division and conference in college sports.

Recipients of the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup are chosen by a committee chaired by former Georgia Athletics Director Vincent Dooley and other distinguished individuals involved in athletics across the country.

"This is a family move. It's what is best for my family," said Moses.

In 2012 Beeville finished the season with just 3 wins, missing out on the postseason. Through four seasons, Moses compiled a record of 15-27.

His Head Coach Tom Allen confirmed this for me this morning.

Shedd, who has already signed with Texas A&M-Kingsville, hauled in just under 1,000 receiving yards last year, while scoring 20 touchdowns. He's a kid with tremendous speed and some of the best hands in the Coastal Bend.

University of Texas Offers Flour Bluff Sophomore Jalen Campbell http://www.kristv.com/news/university-of-texas-offers-flour-bluff-sophomore-jalen-campbell/ http://www.kristv.com/news/university-of-texas-offers-flour-bluff-sophomore-jalen-campbell/ Sports - Friday Night Fever Thu, 28 Mar 2013 3:08:11 PM Tyler Garrett - tgarrett@kristv.com University of Texas Offers Flour Bluff Sophomore Jalen Campbell

FLOUR BLUFF - It's taken a while, but finally college football coaches are realizing that we have plenty of talent here in the Coastal Bend. For the past few years Division II schools have began taking notice and now... Finally the Division I scouts have zeroed in on our area kids.

Flour Bluff sophomore standout Jalen Campbell has made the biggest splash to date, receiving an offer from Mack Brown and the University of Texas this past weekend. The kid stands about 6'2" and runs a 4.5 forty yard dash and his stats through two seasons are just as impressive. Campbell started 27-games for the Hornets intercepting 14-passes and returning four for touchdowns.

Campbell's mom told me that Jalen has yet to make a decision, he still wants to visit LSU, and that is something the family is working to set up.

As for a few other prospects garnering Division I attention, you have Running Back Devin Bisby at Gregory-Portland, and Ingleside Linebacker Christian Britt and wide receiver/defensive back Terrance Robinson.

KINGSVILLE - After four seasons at the helm Wally Moon will not return to the Santa Gertrudis Academy sidelines in 2013. Moon told me that the school said to him, "We need a change in leadership."

Moon has been with the program since it first started up six years ago (first two seasons as an assistant). This past season was a tough one as the Lions finished 1-9.

This season did mark Moon's 18th year of coaching high school football. He will remain as teacher with the school, but has taken a new job as an Assistant Defensive Coach with Texas A&M-Kingsville's football program.

The school has named Stuart Burleson as their new Head Football Coach. Burleson has plenty of experience spending time at Rockport, Freer, and Carroll.

Vasquez going from Assistant Coach to Head Football Coach, replacing Bacy who won 10-games in two seasons at John Paul II.

He told me he isn't ruling out the idea of coaching on the sidelines again, but is just taking it easy right now. He'll assume the role of Cross Country Coach for the Centurions in the meantime.

"I'm happy, I'm just as happy as I can be right now," said Bacy.

FALFURRIAS - It's official, Falfurrias Head Football Coach Joe Rios is saying goodbye to the Jersey's and hello to Hebbronville. We are the first to report this move.

Rios spent the last three seasons at the helm in Falfurrias compiling a record of 9-21, not terribly impressive unless you realize that Rios was the man who helped the Jerseys snap a 30+ game losing streak spanning 4-seasons.

"It's bittersweet, I am excited to go home to help that program become a winner, but sad to be leaving. They treated me well here, the school board and community were great and I am gonna miss them, but I am excited for this new opportunity in Hebbronville," said Rios.

This move will also be a homecoming for him as he grew up in Hebbronville telling me that getting this job, was a dream come true. He also credits his success to training under Refugio Head Coach Jason Herring, as Rios was a Bobcats assistant coach prior to taking in Falfurrias.

"What I learned in Refugio I brought here, I'm talking about living in the weight room and working hard in the offseason. That is why we were successful there and that's what I wanna bring to Hebbronville, I wanna bring everything that Coach Herring taught me," he said.

He will officially take over on April 1st, replacing Don Davis, who spent just one season with the Longhorns who finished the year 0-10. Rios was approved by the school board via a unanimous decision.

Bizarre Coaching Shake Up: Davenport Leaves Aransas Pass for George West http://www.kristv.com/news/bizarre-coaching-shake-up-davenport-leaves-aransas-pass-for-george-west/ http://www.kristv.com/news/bizarre-coaching-shake-up-davenport-leaves-aransas-pass-for-george-west/ Sports - Friday Night Fever Mon, 4 Mar 2013 2:03:01 PM Tyler Garrett - tgarrett@kristv.com Bizarre Coaching Shake Up: Davenport Leaves Aransas Pass for George West

GEORGE WEST - This is one of the most bizarre coaching flip flops I have seen in recent years, Aransas Pass Head Coach Gary Davenport has left the Panthers after one year to be an assistant at George West, his former school. His last day at Aransas Pass was on Thursday. We are the first to report this story.

In 2012 Davenport led AP to a record of 7-3, remember he came out of retirement to take over the Panthers Program.

He told me over the phone today, "I really enjoyed my time in Aransas Pass, I had a lot of fun. The kids were great, I enjoyed the coaches I worked with.. the team exceeded my expectations. But my wife is in George West, and we have been married 41-years and I couldn't pass up the chance to be with her again."

Meanwhile, Jay Newberry has been named to the George West Head Coach and Athletic Director in place of Tim Holt who resigned. Newberry is currently the principal for at George West.

Now multiple sources have confirmed to me that Davenport will coach the offense, while Newberry will be in charge of the defense. This will be the first time Newberry has been the head coach and Davenport the assistant. The two shared the sidelines at Calhoun and George West.

"We're just coaches, we don't care about titles," said Davenport.

Antonio Villalon has been named Interim Athletic Director at Aransas Pass.

CORPUS CHRISTI - National Signing had several last minute surprises across the Coastal Bend, as 18 football standouts and 3 soccer stars signed their National Letters of Intent.

The first signing of the day turned out to be the biggest surprise as Kingsville wide out Chris Lykins shocked everyone turning down A&M-Kingsville for Division 1 Stetson University in Florida. Lykins kept the move a secret from everyone, including his parents who were shocked and thrilled when he made the announcement.

"It actually came last minute happened around 4:30am and before I knew it I was with Stetson," he said.

His teammate and best friend John Houston then signed with A&M-Kingsville over Navy.

"I had an offer from Navy, but they wanted me as a linebacker and I wanted to show what I can do here," said Houston.

Refugio was home to another last minute decision as Wideout Marcus Thompson found a home at Blinn College, telling us the school didn't make an offer until Tuesday evening. The same held true right down the road at Woodsboro where DeBray Bonner got a late night offer from Division II Minot State that he couldn't pass up.

"I had a few offers and they were looking to give me a full ride scholarship and it was a no brainer," said Bonner.

For the most part, the other football signings went as planned, with A&M-Kingsville inking 8 local stars to their 2013 class. Former Mathis standout Levi Mair also joining the Javelinas, Mair of course finished his career at Lockhart.

Click the video for the complete signing day recap, we were the only media outlet in the Coastal Bend at every single signing on National Signing Day.

KINGSVILLE - Former Mathis star running back Levi Mair is coming back home, but not to join the Pirates, instead to play his college football at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Mair confirmed this with me on Tuesday afternoon. The bruising back rushed for over 1,000 yard Mathis as a sophomore, before transferring to Lockhart for his junior and senior seasons.

"I picked A&M-Kingsville because of their tradition and the family feel that the program has, plus all of my family and childhood friends will be able to see me play again, said Mair.

This past season he registered 51 tackles in five games, while rushing for rushing for 516 yards on 70 carries.

He told me the Javs are recruiting him as an athlete, because of his size Mair can play a variety of positions so he will have to wait and see where he ends up.

FLOUR BLUFF - It was the closest vote in the history of our Play of the Year Contest, as just two votes separated first place from second place.

In the end Flour Bluff edged Woodsboro for the honor, and the trophy.

The Hornets big play came in the 3rd Round of the Class 4A Playoffs with under 20-seconds to play in the game. It was 4th and 20, when Kolton Mims found Will Mendiola in the back of the endzone for the game winner.

"It was kind of like just get it into the endzone. It was fourth and 20 like you said. no timeouts. We didn't really have much to think about. It was kind of like everyone spread out get into the endzone and throw it up. We had all of our receivers covered up. Luckily will had one on one coverage out there and it was kind of like I hope you catch it kind of thing," said Mims.

With the victory the Hornets made school history.

"It feels great because it was big for the community and everything. And to see them go and actually vote for us to win this play and see how much it meant to them. As well as to us. It's a great feeling," said Mendiola.
