The Panthers took on a very talented team from Ponder. It was a tough time slot with a start time of 8:30 a.m.

The boys did manage to hang in with their opponents through the first half, but in the end it just wasn't in this cards for this year's team.

Aransas Pass ends up losing to Ponder by a final score of 51-47.

Congratulations to the Panthers on what has been a terrific season. We'll have more on their trip tonight on KRIS 6 Sports.

CORPUS CHRISTI - It's been another great year for the CCISD Mira's Baseball & Softball tournaments here in town. The baseball tournament featured 12 quality teams from all across South Texas, while the softball tourney had 24 teams.

We saw a great matchup in the baseball semifinals. Two top-ranked teams from Corpus Christi, Moody (ranked #1 in class 4A) faced Carroll (#8 in class 5A). The Trojans put up three runs in the top of the first inning, and that was plenty of run support for ace pitcher Kenny Saenz who notched a 5-hit shutout as Moody advances to the title game with the 3-0 win. The other semifinal pitted King and Tuloso-Midway. The Mustangs led from start to finish in a 8-2 victory, setting up a King vs. Moody championship game.

In the title game, Moody jumped out to a quick lead thanks to four first inning runs. The Mustangs could never recover as the Trojans win the 11th annual Mira's Classic, 5-3 the final.

The Carroll Tigers won the third place game 10-1 over Tuloso-Midway.

The softball tournament was dominated by the Lady Cats of Gregory-Portland. G-P finished a stellar undefeated tournament with a 15-0 victory in four innings against Flour Bluff in the Championship game. Carroll defeated EP Winn 16-3 for 3rd place.

Here's the Softball All-Tournament team:

R-F Head Football Coach Huey Chancellor Leaves Pirates for Edna http://www.kristv.com/news/r-f-head-football-coach-huey-chancellor-leaves-pirates-for-edna/ http://www.kristv.com/news/r-f-head-football-coach-huey-chancellor-leaves-pirates-for-edna/ Sports - High School Tue, 25 Feb 2014 2:27:51 PM Drew Collins - dcollins@kristv.com R-F Head Football Coach Huey Chancellor Leaves Pirates for Edna

ROCKPORT - Rockport-Fulton is looking for a new head football coach. Huey Chancellor left the Pirates after three seasons as coach and athletic director. Chancellor will assume the same title at Edna High School.

Chancellor has been a head football coach for 22 seasons. Over the past three years, he led the Pirates to a 15-18 record, including a trip to the third round of the playoffs this past season.

Aransas Coutny ISD said the following in a press release:

Raymond "Huey" Chancellor is resigning from his position as Athletic Director/Head Football Coach for Aransas County ISD effective February 28, 2014. Chancellor has accepted the offer of the AD/Head Football Coach position with Edna ISD.

Chancellor has been the Athletic Director for Aransas County ISD and the Rockport-Fulton High School head football coach since February 2011.

Upon accepting Chancellor's resignation, ACISD Superintendent Joseph Patek stated, "We hate to see Coach Chancellor leave. He did a great job leading our athletic program and, as our head football coach, led the Pirates to the playoffs two of his three years here. We wish him well in his new job."

The district will begin the search for Chancellor's replacement immediately with the goal of having the new Athletic Director/Head Football Coach in place before the end of the school year.

Until the vacancy is filled, Chris Bentley, Girls Athletic Coordinator/Head Girls Basketball Coach, will serve as the Interim Athletic Director and Casey Stephenson, Rockport-Fulton High School Teacher/Coach, as the Interim Boys Athletics Coordinator.

14-Game HS Baseball Slate at Whataburger Field Begins Monday http://www.kristv.com/news/14-game-hs-baseball-slate-at-whataburger-field-begins-monday/ http://www.kristv.com/news/14-game-hs-baseball-slate-at-whataburger-field-begins-monday/ Sports - High School Tue, 11 Feb 2014 3:26:19 PM 14-Game HS Baseball Slate at Whataburger Field Begins Monday

CORPUS CHRISTI - Pay no attention to the weather.

The "interschool games" portion of the University Interscholastic League's high school baseball calendar begins Monday, with all area teams opening by Thursday the 20th.

While priming for the 10th season of Corpus Christi Hooks Baseball, the Whataburger Field staff will host 14 high school games between Monday and March 22.

"Giving our area high school programs an opportunity to play here enables us to share a remarkable community asset," Hooks Senior Director of Communications Matt Rogers said. "We are extremely proud of the ballpark and South Texas' reputation for excellence in the sport. Hard-working and visionary coaches, passionate and focused players and strong community support are a great recipe for success."

As is custom, the Carroll Tigers open Whataburger Field's amateur calendar. Lee Yeager's 14th Tiger team plays host to Victoria East Monday at 6:30. Carroll's District 28-5A local rival, King, entertains San Antonio Churchill 24 hours later.

After the Kleberg Bank College Classic February 20-23 (BYU/TCU/UTSA/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), the prep schedule resumes on February 26 with Mike Davila's Tuloso-Midway club vs. Rockport-Fulton and first-year Pirates skipper Jerry Howell. Three days later, it's final-day action of the 11th MIRA'S Sports & More Classic.

Then comes the first of five district games on tap, as Ben Bolt and London tangle in 32-A March 4. Other district match-ups include Flour Bluff-Ray on March 11 (31-4A), Santa Rosa-Bishop on the 13th (32-2A), Laredo-Martin vs. Moody on the 18th (31-4A) and West Oso-Ingleside on the 21st (30-3A).

Non-district tilts between Alice and Gregory-Portland, Weslaco and Robstown and Laredo Alexander and Carroll round out the schedule.

Alexander (4th) and Carroll (8th) are state-ranked by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association in 5A with Churchill receiving votes. 2013 state finalist Moody is the top-rated team in 4A and Victoria East 14th.

Ninety-five high school contests have been played at Whataburger Field since 2006.

G-P's Bisby and Teel Ink NLI's http://www.kristv.com/news/g-p-s-bisby-and-teel-ink-nli-s/ http://www.kristv.com/news/g-p-s-bisby-and-teel-ink-nli-s/ Sports - High School Mon, 10 Feb 2014 4:21:31 PM Drew Collins - dcollins@kristv.com G-P's Bisby and Teel Ink NLI's

PORTLAND - It was a day they'll never forget for two Gregory-Portland student athletes on Monday. Football standout Devin Bisby and track & field star Haley Teel signed letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.

Teel signed with Alabama - Roll Tide! She won the state championship in shot put last year, while finishing runner-up in discus. Teel owns the school record in both events, and is hoping to take home the gold medal for both in this year's state meet.

Bisby signed with Dixie State, a division two school in St. George, Utah. "The Biz" was regarded as one of the top football players in the Coastal Bend for the past several years. He finished as the all-time leading rusher in G-P history with 5,833 yards. Bisby also set the career touchdown record with 70, and holds the record for most rushing yards in a single game with 358.

Congrats to Devin and Haley! Way to represent the Coastal Bend, and we wish them the best of luck at the next level!

National Signing Day: Four Area Athletes Headed Division I http://www.kristv.com/news/national-signing-day-four-area-athletes-headed-division-i/ http://www.kristv.com/news/national-signing-day-four-area-athletes-headed-division-i/ Sports - High School Wed, 5 Feb 2014 6:16:39 PM Drew Collins - dcollins@kristv.com National Signing Day: Four Area Athletes Headed Division I

CORPUS CHRISTI - It started early Wednesday morning and extended through late in the afternoon, it's National Signging Day. Several student athletes from the Coastal Bend signed on the dotted line to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.

Here we go with the football signings. At Calallen High School, six Wildcats were recognized in front of a big crowd in the Library. Do-it-all wide receiver Triston Crossland is headed not too far north to UTSA. Crossland told us that the coaches want him to play running back and wide receiver with the Roadrunners.

"I've always wanted to play division I football, it's been a dream so when that offer came I knew that they believed in me and they were the first team to truly belive in me," Crossland said.

Linebacker Trevor Moses is staying even closer to home -- he's headed to Texas A&M Kingsville. The soon-to-be Javelina told us that the coaches want him to put on about 30lbs, and he's ready for the challenge.

"They have a long tradition of working hard and I know the coaches over there for a pretty long time and I know they're ready to improve," Moses said.

Fellow linebacker Kade Young is taking his skills on the field and in the classroom to Truman State in Missouri. Young could have gone to any Ivy League school, coach Phil Danaher pointed out.

"It was a great fit for me academically and athletically," Young said. "I took a visit up there, I love the people, and the coaching staff and the environment was awesome."

Three other Wildcats are headed to East Texas Baptist University, Dakota Cooksy-Hale, Austin Revels, and Creyton McDermett.

"Since middle school ball we've been playing together, so taking them up there it'lll be good to have someone you know," Revels said.

Four Ingleside Mustangs signed on the dotted line this morning. JD Rodriguez is headed to Hardin Simmons, Christian Britt is going to Navarro Junior College, Trent Selby is headed to Mary Hardin Baylor and Terrance Gross will be in the Lone Star Conference at Tarleton State University.

"Most of my family doesn't go through college for me to take this step and go is going to be exciting for them," Gross said.

At Refugio High School, JB Brown signed to Texas Lutheran University and Devon LaFrance is also headed to the Lone Star Conference - at West Texas A&M. Then around noon, big news from the Bobcats. Star quarterback Travis Quintanilla recieved an offer from Texas A&M Kingsville to play football and baseball. Quintanilla verbally committed to the Javelinas and is expected to sign his letter of intent on Friday morning.

In the afternoon, at Flour Bluff High School, defensive back Adrian Hynson signed with division one UTEP.

"I felt comfortable, I felt like the coaching staff was real good," Hynson said. "I feel like I could fit in fine, I just felt like it was where I need to be."

It wasn't just football signing day, several other student-athletes signed letters of intent for other sports.

West Oso's Akeyla Mitchell was very emotional at her signing for a track & field scholarship at Kansas State University.

"I can't believe this is my last year at Oso," Mitchell said. "I did volleyball, I did basketball, but track - that's my ticket out of here."

Refugio's Morgan Klaevemann signed to play softball at Florida State University.

King's Julian Sanchez signed a soccer scholarship to St. Edwards in Austin.

Make sure to check out all the pictures from Signing Day in the slideshow at the top of the story.
