JPII Boy's Basketball Coach Sam Odoms Suspended Indefinitely http://www.kristv.com/news/jpii-boy-s-basketball-coach-sam-odoms-suspended-indefinitely/ http://www.kristv.com/news/jpii-boy-s-basketball-coach-sam-odoms-suspended-indefinitely/ Sports - High School Thu, 4 Dec 2014 7:39:51 PM JPII Boy's Basketball Coach Sam Odoms Suspended Indefinitely

CORPUS CHRISTI - Today John Paul II announced that boy's basketball coach Sam Odoms has been suspended for the next two seasons. The program has been placed on two years probation and they forfeit all of their wins so far from this season. All of this is the result of multiple violations including the participation of ineligible players.

Odoms has also been cited for video taping opponents without consent.

These violations were first reported to TAPPS by the administration of John Paul II. Following a lengthy investigation by TAPPS, these penalties were officially handed down yesterday. The school would not comment on camera but did issue this statement to KRIS 6 Sports:

"St. John Paul II High School, in every manner, complies with and is supportive of the polices, standards, and directives of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. (TAPPS). On November 19, 2014, we became aware of the fact Coach Odoms had allowed ineligible players to participate. We immediately notified TAPPS of the infraction"

Odoms cannot coach at any TAPPS school in the state of Texas until June 1, 2016 and prior to reinstatement, he will have to appear before the TAPPS executive board.

Odem Talks 4th Round Football Playoffs http://www.kristv.com/news/odem-talks-4th-round-football-playoffs/ http://www.kristv.com/news/odem-talks-4th-round-football-playoffs/ Sports - High School Thu, 4 Dec 2014 5:49:29 PM Odem Talks 4th Round Football Playoffs

ODEM - The Odem Owls are coming off their 11th straight win following their last-second win over Van Vleck in round three of the high school football playoffs last week. It's been 12 years since they made it to the 4th round of the playoffs but they're in the 4th round now and they're taking it game-by-game.

"Twelve years, thats a long time and a lot of crushing losses I'm sure," said current Owls QB Michael Everett.

"It's a big deal for us to be practicing and playing over Thanksgiving and now we're into December football and it's a whole new level of excitement for these guys," said head coach A.J. Martinez.

Odem plays undefeated Blanco on Friday night--one of the top-ranked teams in the state.

"Pound people is what they do. They're bigger than people and they run hard," Martinez said.

"Offensively we're going to have to execute, we know what we need to do, we just need a good game plan and we have to execute," Everett said.

The Owls say they've worked hard since the first day of practice and they don't plan to stop.

"We're for real, you don't go to the 4th round without seeing some talent and actually making a run for it and playing good teams. So I guess it shows that we're not here to just mess around, we're here, we're serious," said Everett.

"Anything we can do to bring up the morale of this community and town is something that we live to play for," said Martinez.

MATHIS - An amazing basketball game last night as the Mathis Lady Pirates defeated the Kingsville Lady Brahmas 98-0. That's right, as hard as it is to believe it really happened.

I have been covering high school sports for over 30 years and I can promise you I have never ever seen a final score like this. When i first heard about this last night, I refused to put it on the air because I refused to believe it. But here it is.

This is unheard of for a high school varsity basketball team to get shut out.

The Lady Pirates scored 23 in the first quarter, followed by 24 in the second, 24 in the third, and 27 more in the fourth quarter.

We are checking to see if this is any type of national record. In my opinion it must be. Mathis coach Larry Skinner told me his starters played for about eleven minutes each before emptying the bench. But added all eleven players got in some playing time. We'll take a closer look at what could be a record breaking game on KRIS 6 News at 6pm.

Voters Approve 58 Million Dollar HS Stadium For Katy ISD http://www.kristv.com/news/voters-approve-58-million-dollar-hs-stadium-for-katy-isd/ http://www.kristv.com/news/voters-approve-58-million-dollar-hs-stadium-for-katy-isd/ Sports - High School Wed, 5 Nov 2014 5:49:47 PM Associated Press Voters Approve 58 Million Dollar HS Stadium For Katy ISD

KATY, Texas (AP) - Houston-area voters have approved a whopping bond package that includes $58 million to build a 12,000-seat high school football stadium.

The $748 million bond approved by voters in the Katy school district will pay for new schools and includes money for the stadium.

A year ago, voters rejected plans for a stadium that would have seated 14,000 and cost more than $69 million.

The stadium approved Tuesday will certainly be one of the most expensive in Texas history, but its price tag falls just short of the $60 million the Dallas suburb of Allen spent for its stadium.

The Allen facility, built two years ago, was closed earlier this year after structural flaws were found. The Allen Eagles play their football games elsewhere.

Female King Football Player Challenges Status Quo http://www.kristv.com/news/female-king-football-player-challenges-status-quo/ http://www.kristv.com/news/female-king-football-player-challenges-status-quo/ Sports - High School Sat, 25 Oct 2014 7:58:21 PM Michelle Margaux Female King Football Player Challenges Status Quo

CORPUS CHRISTI - Football is a pre-dominantly male sport, but one King High School freshman is changing the game.

"They're like, 'Whoa, you're a girl?'" said King athlete Ellie Vasquez.

Ellie Vasquez already challenges the norm by being the only female on the field, but what's even more impressive is that she's a defensive lineman. A good one, too.

"I thought it was a one time thing but then it got so fun to the point where I was like, 'I want to keep doing this!'" Vasquez said.

"Coaching her we don't treat her any different than a boy or girl except for the fact that she's got to go to a different locker room," said Vasquez's coach Matthew Alexander.

When Ellie is on the football field, she's not even thinking about being female, the one thing that's on her mind, is focusing on the game.

"I'm not just a chick you know, I come out here and I do my job, I do what I'm supposed to do," said Vasquez.

Vasquez says her opponents don't even notice that she's a girl.

"The biggest challenge is standing here and gaining respect from these guys," explained Vasquez.

Last year she got Defensive MVP from her middle school and she hopes other females can follow her lead.

"It's your life! don't listen to what other people say," Vasquez said.

Vasquez hopes to keep playing and make the varsity team.
