Rick Spruill 6 News Team - Multi-Media Journalists Thu, 10 Oct 2013 4:42:01 PM Rick Spruill

Rick Spruill joined the KRIS news team in Oct., 2013 after three years as investigative journalist at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

He graduated from Baylor University in 1994 with a History degree and returned home to Dallas, where he went to work for Excel Telecommunications as a regulatory analyst.

This opened doors into project management and later, sales and business development.

But his passion for writing and communicating with clarity and precision led Rick to switch careers, eventually landing him a spot as a cops reporter at the Anderson Independent-Mail in Anderson, SC.

While there he rose from covering general assignments to embedding himself as a police and public safety reporter, riding along with sheriff's deputies in pursuit of gang members, developing in-depth features on the rise of highway fatalities caused by unsafe road conditions and a thousand daily stories in-between.

A love of Texas brought him back to the Lone Star State in 2010, when he joined the Caller-Times as an investigative and data reporter.

Rick's need to keep pushing, keep asking questions, has led to award-winning coverage of local and state political leaders, dysfunctional state agencies and topics of national interest, including the 2011 arrest of a Corpus Christi man since convicted of an international assassination plot.

His 2012 coverage of the troubled, $84 billion Texas Windstorm Insurance Association won the coveted Nancy Monson Freedom of Information Award for outstanding effort in upholding the principles embodied in the First Amendment and accountability in government.

His wife, a South Carolina native, is a speech-language pathologist at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital. They have a daughter.

Rick loves college football and is proud of the Baylor Bears, even though most years it is too painful.

He white wing dove hunts in the Fall and fishes Upper Padre Island, year round. But he is happiest with a hot grill, a good brisket, a lawn chair and a well-stocked cooler.
