CORPUS CHRISTI - It's one of the biggest football rivalries in the Coastal Bend. Gregory-Portland and Calallen. The battle of the Wildcats.

"Definitely different than any other week, it's not just a regular season game," said GP linebacker Aaron Gonzales. "It's a rivalry. It's been around for a long time, no matter what the records are, you know you're always going to get a fight."

Calallen agrees.

"It's going to be a fight. We always go into every district game thinking it's going to be a fight but this one is especially going to be more physical," says Calallen linebacker Kade Young. "They are our cross-town rivals, we're ready to play, they're ready to play."

The Wildcats (both Wildcats) have a district loss, and can't afford another. Calallen (4-2, 1-1) and Gregory-Portland (6-1, 2-1) both lost to Port Lavaca Calhoun earlier this season. But both teams still believe they can win district 30-4A. Crazier things have happened. As one Wildcat pointed out to me earlier this week, Victoria East upset rival Victoria West.

If the Wildcats (both, again) want to achieve that goal of winning district, it's a must win on Friday night.

"I've played them already two years on varsity and you know it kind of gets more intense by the years," GP lineman Steven Rocha said.

This year should continue that trend of intensity. By all accounts, it should be a great, hard-fought, four-quarter ballgame.

"I just think it'll be a great game," Callalen wide receiver Tristan Crossland said. "No matter what team gets down you can't get down about it because it's all four quarters and it'll just be a great game."
