Simple things like bread and batteries. The shelves were pretty empty, especially of water and canned meat. The simple stuff.

Lots of windows were boarded up and the big thing down here, so I'm told, is sandbagging. Lots of sandbags are around.

We're currently driving through some streamer showers, and as soon as I finished this sentence, they're over.

Still about 30 miles from the Island. I'll update this blog as soon as I can. Feel free to leave questions or comments.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND -- Forgive me for a quick update here, but I've been up since about 3:00 a.m. and we have a big day ahead of us.

Apologies for not seeing you at nine, as promised, we had a few technical issues, but in a hurricane, those things happen. Glad to see you all at ten.

We'll be live from South Padre Island tomorrow, and we'll be filing as many online reports as time allows. Of course, I'd love to field your questions, if you have any, about what's happening down here.

One of the biggest surprises to me so far is how many people are here. And I'm not just talking locals. Here at our hotel, there are many families who, for whatever reason, chose to ride out the storm. I hope to tell some of their stories tomorrow.

We're of course, also joined here by our friends in the media from a variety of places. We shared resources tonight with NBC, and the Dallas NBC station. Our first stop was to the Weather Channel satellite truck.

Which reminds me, we are using satelitte trucks, so please forgive the slight delay when watching our coverage.

Time for some sleep. Be sure to follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/reporterfox

Here Comes Alex http://www.kristv.com/blog-entries/here-comes-alex/ http://www.kristv.com/blog-entries/here-comes-alex/ Hurricane Alex Coverage Wed, 30 Jun 2010 7:19:19 AM Keaton Fox - kfox@kristv.com Here Comes Alex

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND -- The island is beginning to feel the effects of Alex, as heavy rain is moving in. Winds aren't that bad right now, breezy, but only somewhere between 5-10 mph.

Last night, the island was pretty busy still. We did see people still trying to board up before Alex makes landfall. Many business are open, but boarded up.

Tourists are still here, which is a little suprising, but the locals seem almost unfased by the storm. We're out finding great stories for you today. See you later on KRIS and KZTV, and of course, all day on http://twitter.com/reporterfox
